There really is not much better than freshly baked bread right out of the oven, and hot, crisp and seasoned breadsticks are truly the king of freshly baked breads. The crispy, crunchy outside and the fluffy soft interior are pure heaven accentuated by the seasonings and parmesan cheese. Honestly, I bet you can't eat just one of these.

    You're going to love this!

    • Easy to make - with just 10 minutes of active cooking time these breadsticks are so easy to make!
    • Fresh baked goodness - there is nothing like homemade, especially when it comes to bread!
    • Completely addictive - from the olive oil dough to the garlic parmesan topping these breadsticks are full of flavour and totally addictive. A batch is gone before you know it in our house!

    Ingredients

Ingredients for parmesan breadsticks with text laabels.
    • Flour - regular old all purpose flour will do, but you can use bread flour if you've got it.
    • Yeast - dry active yeast.
    • Olive oil - adding this to the dough gives the breadsticks a nice flavour and a crispy crunch.
    • Butter - use salted. This gives the bread a beautiful flavour, and helps to keep the flavourings on the breadsticks.
    • Italian seasoning, parmesan, and garlic - seasonings for the breadsticks. If you don't have Italian seasoning on hand, any combination of basil, oregano, marjoram, rosemary and thyme will do.

    How to make them

Add the water, olive oil, yeast and sea salt to the bowl of a stand mixer and stir well to mix.

Water, flour, yeast and salt in a stand mixer bowl.

Fit on a dough kneading attachment and begin adding the flour to the water ½ cup at a time mixing well at a medium speed before adding the next ½ cup. Continue until all the flour is added and you have formed a shaggy ball of dough.

Tip: If your ball is too dry and not coming together add a splash of water. If the dough is too wet, add a bit of flour.

Increase the speed to 8 and knead the dough for about 3 minutes, or until the shaggy ball has turned into a smooth ball.

Drizzle a splash of olive oil over the dough and rub it over the surface of it to keep the dough from getting dry, then cover with plastic wrap or a moist kitchen towel and place in a warm spot to rise until the dough has doubled in size. About 45 minutes - 1 hour depending on the temperature of your kitchen

Tip: Place the dough in a sunny window or somewhere warm to help it rise faster! The ideal temperate for rising dough is 80-90ºF.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll into a 20 x 9 rectangle. Cut the dough into 12 equally sized strips, then fold each strip in half and twist. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet.

These were so good with your pizza dip! The whole family loved them. We didn't have any Italian seasoning, so I used some dried oregano and red pepper flakes 🙂

Am I ok to make in advance and then just do step 6 when we are ready to eat?

How far in advance are you looking to make them? You could probably prepare them to that point and refrigerate them for a few hours or possibly a day before baking. Just let the breadsticks get to room temperature before baking.
